bye boat keepers | bye-boat keepers, who came to Newfoundland with merchant fishing ships, began working independently, paying their own passage back home to England in the fall. They hired servants who took care of their own return to England each fall, purchasing passage with the merchant fishing ships. The bye-boat keepers, usually two or three together, tended to lease vessels and property from resident Newfoundlanders, and divided the profits at the end of the year |
