Tuesday 3rd Eight men excluding Mr K. at work. Beams for first story all put in position Cross beam & posts for petitioning offices arranged S.W. side of Second storey posted and part of East side with wall plate fastened on each. Lower-stored board all around and a few boards fastened on second storey

Wednesday 4 Five men with Mr. K at work until 3 pm when it began to rain & continued so that work was suspended The posts in second story now all in place about eight feet of lofting nailed down and part of s.w. side of second story boarded up

Thursday 5th Shop lofted except abt. 12 ft. of office, only about 4 ft remains all around to be boarded up, two couples made

Friday 6 Ten couples now finished lofting finished and only nine feet of the flooring remains to be done seven men with Mr. K at work most of the day.

Saturday June 7th 4 Men at work all the day & five half the day The shop floorring was finished in the forenoon and in the afternoon the West end was ceiled to a finish and about two thirds of each side The couples excepting 4 was also placed in position

Monday 9th Seven men & Mr. K. at work all day Couples all finished and put in place sheathing entirely finished about four feet all around the building being unfinished until today. The first story was also ceiled to a finish

Tuesday 10 Nine men & Mr K at work all day covering and completed it within a few feet one of the offices was petitioned and the other half [petitioned]

June 11, Wednesday

Wednesday 11 Fourteen men with Mr. K. at work Second story ceiled all around Second office finished partitions position of stairs opened up. Covering left unfinished from yesterday finished Vestibule leading to shop formed and some fixtures made and ceiling done. Some scafolding [sic] on the outside around the building was also put up

Thursday 12 Mr K. & F. Pynn in the forenoon prepared the roof in the shaping of the ends of the covering for the felt and in the afternoon with the help of eight other men the work of covering with felt was satisfactorily finished.

Friday 13th F. pynn sick Mr. K. working alone put up work bench in the morning and began making window boxes.

Saturday 14th Mr. K. continued at the same work as yesterday and now has eight partily finished he left for his home late at evening having Jos. Clarks horse & our wagon.

June 16, Monday

Monday 16 Mr. K. arrived at 11 am & spent the rem. of the day at work at same job as two proceeding days. Francis Pynn ceiled underneath the two shop large front windows and did other ceiling to the windows on the outside

Tuesday 17 Mr. K. engaged at same work. Francis Pynn ill result of fall yesterday so that he had to absent himself not been able to work

Wed 18 Dressing up the frames for window sashes for the two front show windows was Mr K work all day

Saturday 21st Painted the two sashes and made the front facing for end above window F Pynn at work all day Wm J. Driscoll helped him in the afternoon to do a little ceiling under the beams. Thus endeth the first months work

Monday June 23 Mr. Kelland fitted in place the two show window boxes and put in position the front facing with cornice etc over the said windows. Francis Pynn & Wm J Driscoll used up what V-joint board we had on hand and nearly finished one column of arching they also did some ceiling to front windows.

Tuesday 24 Mr. K & F Pynn worked all day Wm. J. Driscoll half only one of the offices was stripped and made ready for the beaver board the under end facing and other end facings put in place and a little red [?] put on end between facing & windows

Wed. 25 Mr. K. Moulding & panelling front end of first story F Pynn striped [sic] with inch board the small office and prepared it for beaver board

Wednesday July 2nd Began clapboarding front end and beginning at the top worked down about two thirds of the windows in second story in straight course from either side

Thursday 3 Nailed narrow strip zinc above the facing connecting the show window put facing board on it and underneath the three top windows put Ruberioid between the two stories and did a little toward panelling the same

Friday 4 Made three doors boxes in the forenoon and fitted three window boxes in the side of shop in the afternoon

Sat 5 Moulded the pannls [sic] above window & put smaller [pannls] between afternoon painted the front eves with red & the clapboard down to [?] of top windows with grey

Monday 7 Finished the little clapboarding between windows on front and the painting to it as well spent forenoon at that work. Afternoon commenced ceiling arching shop finished first section left partily done by F. P. & WJD and did a little to secd. section

Tuesday 8 Mr. K. had the help of Wm. J. Driscoll all day at work arching shop. finished the second and part of the third section

Wed 9. Mr. K & W.J.D. finished the arching and of the entrance over the stairs as well. Afternoon to JW painted the entrance to shop with 101 and three other window boxes whilst Mr. K fitted sashes for front window

Thursday 10 W.J.D more than half wainscotted large office using up what yellow pine we had. he then did a little wainscoting to smaller office with V-Joint spruce Mr. K put glass in one large window painted with red & put in place and did a little toward finishing the other.

Friday July 11th 1913 Mr. K. Finished painted and put in position the second show window put in place shop door box and faced it on the outside and fan light opening as well. W.J.D. spent the day wainscotting the small office & finished [doing?] that work

Saturday 12 W.J.D. absent Mr. K. faced the inside of shop door and the outside of two & inside of one office door before going home

Monday 14 W.J.D. painted the wainscoting of small office and gave a second coat of white to part of 1st story of front and Mr. K returned at noon. and dressed up a few boards for to case beams leading through shop

Tuesday 15 W.J.D. finished painting and mostly moulding with cement paint Mr. K. casing beams and evening assisted by W.J.D. put on some cornice moulding.

Wed. 16 Mr. K. & W.J.D. finished puting [sic] cornice moulding around lofting of shop & also finished puting [sic] beaver board on large office and used up what was left on smaller office

Thursday 17 W.J.D. painted the largest office roof and walls apart from wainscotting also the largest part of one side of shop and Mr. K. faced to a finish the two show windows

Friday 18 W.JD. finished E wall S. end & half of S.W. side Mr. K. put some little facing on ceiling by the door ¼ round in one corner & spent rest of day making improvement to the arch leading to stairs

Sat 19 WJ.D. Absent Mr. K. put ¼ Round in east corner finished the arch [entry jumps from bottom on one column to top of next] Sat 19 Ct'd. and partily finished the undercasing of the two beams

Monday 21 Mr. K. Plained and moulded the four pillars or props for the support of the beams in the shop and put one in its place and thus endeth the work of the second month.

Tuesday 22nd put two more pillars in place and having to lengthen them by a few inches took the day

Wed. 23rd In the morning or before breakfast lengthened the fouth [sic] pillar and put it in place afterward put some moulding around upper end & painted them He also put a little hard pine ceiling around large office

Mr. K. finished the wainscotting of large office and put on moulding after dressed up some batans for beaver board Joseph Clark finished painting. [sic] sw. wall & part of end west of stairs was then taken sick and had to leave of [sic] S. J Woodland spent 4 hrs painting beams & cornice moulding and loft with grey

Friday 25 Mr. K. Dressed & painted a number of batans for office and gave the loft of larger office and side of same a second coat of green paint At 6 pm he left for home to stay for a day or two & Johney drove him as far as H Hr.

Saturday July 26th 1913 Mr. Kelland home at Winterton S.J. Woodland finished painting the larger office with Green Paint and the facings of the one of the show windows with Grey spent about 7 hrs at work

Monday 28th Mr. K. still at home postcard informed us that owing to death of daughters little boy could not leave hence nothing done in any way

Monday 4 Spent the day putting battans around and on loft of small office and faced the door of same inside

Tuesday 5 spent the day dressing up and otherwise preparing some board for shelving.

Monday 11 Returned at breakfast hour and began making partitions for Groceries build box length of one side of shop and put 8 partitions in same. JB Mansfield worked for two hrs.

Tuesday 12 Mr. Kelland with J.B.M. spend the day making or partitioning of the long box and also one on end for nails but did not quite finish it. G.J. Woodland and Geo. C. Mansfield painted the lofting and part of the shelves & Joseph Clark painted one window the arch & office door facing part of ceiling and some of the shelving

Wednesday 13 Mr. K. finished the boxes for Groceries & Nails laid the board for the hanging of the Covers and put in place one set of shelves on side J.B.M & JC. spent before breakfast finishing the shelves partily painted yesterday and then went about their own doings

August Thursday 14th 1913 Mr. Kelland put in position Two board south side of side window to make a cubboard [sic] for medicine and finished three shelves from window to south end

Saturday 16 The same work as yesterday was being done all day The shelving on side was finished Cornice moulding put on and three of the shelves west of arch put in place

Monday 18 Finished the shelving and cut Beaver up a plank for to begin the making of the window sashes

Tuesday 19 Sawed up plained and moulded sufficient pieces for the making of all the window sashes required for the building

Wednesday 20 Mortised & put together the eight pairs of sashes required for the building and dressed part of the frame for shop door. In the afternoon Nathnl. Goodwin was at work and made half covers enough for half the boxes

August 21, Thursday

Thursday 21st Made & hinged the door & painted it on the outside

August 22, Friday Friday 22 Fitted painted and put the glass in & put the sashes in the boxes of the three end front windows. Nathnl. Goodwin finished making the covers for the boxes & hinged them all and this job had his attention all day Joseph Clark who was at O. Perlican in the forenoon for Miss Thistle trunks who will teach at Sibleys Cove spent this afternoon painting the [?] around arch way between the two offices with green Paint and thus ended the work of the third month

Saturday 24 [sic] Mr. Kelland spent the day putting lock on shop door having difficult in doing so took the time until 6 pm when he left for home Joseph Clark spent the day painting shelves on Grey side of shop and nearly finished it Nathnl.. G — faced window in centre of shop and the one in the smaller office with the exception of putty around the [?]

Monday 25 Mr. Kelland at home all day Nathnl. Goodwin finished the window of Saturday

fitted put the glass in and faced the one in the larger office whilst Joseph Clark painted the edges of all the shelves with brown paint

Tuesday 26 Mr. Kelland returned early & began at work soon after breakfast and prepared the framing of the two office doors.

Wednesday 27th Mr. Kelland Put together pannelled and mo the two office doors and moulded the one side of one

Thursday 28 Finished what was left undone of the two doors yesterday and afterwards hanged the both of them. Nathnl. Goodwin was at work too faced two front windows secd. storey and partily finished the third. Joseph Clark was also at work and painted the cornice moulding above the shelves on either side of shop and also painted all the sashes with white he also in the afternoon digged about half of the trench for the reception of rock & concrete for step leading to shop

Friday 29 Mr. Kelland put Locks on office doors & painted them and made fan light sash for shop door. Nathnl. Goodwin finished facing third window left of [sic] yesterday and put the glass in the side & west end windows & fitted them Joseph Clark spent half day at work digging trench again

Saturday 30 Mr. Kelland was the only man at work and he work [sic] half a day preparing the board to begin at the work of making the counters and then went home on horse back

Monday Sept 1st. Mr. Kelland at Home at Winterton and did not return for the day consequently nothing done for the shop

Tuesday 2nd Mr. K – arrived in time for breakfast and spent the day dressing up & sawing at the frame for one of the counters

Wed. 3. Mr. K. Natnl. Goodwin spent the day at the counters mortising :& dressing up pannels [sic] & put together two fronts.

Thursday 4 Mr. K. Dressed up several boards making the fronts their proper width & runned out about loft moulding and spent the day at this work.

Friday 5 Mr. K. with Nathnl. G. mortised the 4 ends pannelled and moulded the fronts apart from ends

September 6, Saturday

Sat. 6 Fastened ends to fronts finished the moulding by the pannells [sic] of both and dressed the top of one, and one plank of the second counter.

September 8, Monday

Monday 8 Mr. K. Fitted the tops of Counters for gluing and with the assistance of Nathnl. Goodwin dressed up & mortised much of the frame for the two other counters Joseph Clark removed clapboard from one side of old shop

Tuesday 9 th Mr. K. and Nath G put together the two fronts & panelled them. Mortised & put together the four ends, belonging to them. Joseph Clark spent the day removing clapboard from old shop

Wed. 10 Mr K. spent forenoon getting out moulding for Counters whilst Nathnl. Goodwin spent the day using them for that purpose. Mr. K. spent afternoon puting [sic] up the blinds in the shop & offices & Joseph Clark removed clapboard from South end of Old shop and eave boards from around it and at evening helped Noah Driscol (who spent afternoon) hauling sand and gathering stone for steps leading to shop

Thursday 11 Mr. K. spent much of the day helping Geo Mansfield at work at stairs the steps being finished as far as the first landing Nathnl. Goodwin put facing boards around fronts & ends of second lot of counters & dressed up one set of tops Noah Driscoll & his two sons spent afternoon at step and used three brls concrete

Friday 12 Mr K. put the glass in the two office doors helped about the stairs and fitted the tops so as they may be glued together Geo. Mansfield Jr. finished puting [sic] steps in stairs whilst Nathnl. Goodwin finished dressing up the tops & prepared pcs for gripping the tops when glued Noah Driscoll & Chesley spent the forenoon finishing the front step and partily made one block for the foundation of the wing

Saturday 13 Noah spent about 4 hrs at work dug a hole and built one box for concret [sic] for a pillar and it being fine spent rest of day at fish. Joseph Clark spent about 8 or 9 hrs removing fence & putting it in good shape from [Cook room?] to shop Mr. K. & N. G. removed the counters from the loft to the shop Glued the tops painted them all except panels [sic]. Mr. K whent [sic] home at evening. Geo. Mansfield was at work at stairs putting pcs. around end of loft and did some finishing but not quite all

Monday 15 Mr. K returned in the morning & spent the day plaining and otherwise smoothing the four counters so as to give them a smooth surface

Tuesday 16 Mr. K. & N. Goodwin fastened counter to floor put some finishing pcs on ends nailed cornice moulding around the four and partily put up shelves along by each front window

Wed. 17 Finished shelves refered [sic] to yesterday Nathnl. G. painted them with grey also the stain & some finishing with green & helped Mr. K in painting one counter Mr. Kelland put sizing on counters & large office & ptd one counter

September 18, Thursday Thursday 18 Mr. Kelland spent much of the day puting [sic] freeze [sic] work around small office N.G. varnished three counters and Large office Geo. Mansfield did the finishing to the sides of small stairs & the painting and then sawed out some pcs. for counter drawer to run on

Friday 19 Mr. K. finished the artistic bordering around small office and the large one as well and put canvs. on the floor of same. Geo M – & Nathnl. G. spent the day dressing up and mortising the frames and placed them in position under two counters for drawers to run in

Saturday 20 Nathnl. G. & Mr. K put frames under second lot of counters Mr. K. varnished the tops again and assorted the board & otherwise Cleared up the loft while N.G. prepared some boards for the eaves G.M. absent

September 22, Monday

Monday 22 Mr. K. & G.M. put up scafold [sic] on S.W. side of shop & put eave boards & cornice moulding nearly along the whole side N.G. spent the day preparing board for the same Joseph Clark and John B. M. removed shingles & covering from old shop took down Chimney & spent the afternoon removing goods from old to new store where nearly of the business of the day was done for first time

Tuesday 23rd Mr. Kelland put Cornice moulding around eave and facing underneath with up & down [facing] for top story dressed up & painted blocks for the same Geo M. Nathnl. G. spent the day clapboarding doing so as far down as scaffolding would allow them about 5 ft J Driscoll in the afternoon painted the eve all along the side with white Joseph C. JB.M & Wm.H.G. spent the day taking down old shop The roof is now taken of [sic] lofting taken up and the ends taken down to beams

Wednesday 24 Mr. K. put in block of red & white under facing & finished one of sizing board so as to give side its proper appearance W.JD. finished painting the first fleet of clapboard and then the scafolding [sic] was lowered several feet and during the day that distance between was very nearly done by Geo. M – N.G. & W J.D. Wm H.G. Joseph & Jabez Clark & J.BM. with Wm Barrett very nearly spent the day taking down & removing the debris of old shop which was cleared away to a finish and holes digged for concrete pillars for foundation of wing soon to be put on

Thursday 25 Cannot keep quite in touch with work today but Nath G. & Geo. Mansfield finished the side to within a days work for one and WJ.D did the painting to above the lower windows & evening he fell of [sic] of a barrel while painting and greatly injured his shoulder Mr. Kelland put on the end facings and base board and lined out the foundation for the wings having spent much of the day with Wm HG. John B. Mansfie [sic] Wm. Barrett & Joseph & Jabez Clark who was engaged at the work of hauling sand & mixing concrete the pillars for it having been digged & built

Friday 26 Nathnl. Goodwin with the assistance of Mr. Kelland finished Clapboarding s.w. side of shop the waterways was put on by Mr. Kelland & he also assisted Wm H Goodwin in laying the cells for the foundation of the wings Other workmen Spent the day loading Garnishee

Saturday 27 Nathnl. Goodwin & Geo. Mansfield Jr. spent the day at work on eaves under cover of West end. [?] Mr. K assisted Wm H Goodwin Joseph Clark & Jno. B. Mansfield at the wing until his going home in the afternoon. The end of the old office was take down without removing the ceiling of yellow pine from it & that was again put in position for the new the side was posted out and all the sleepers laid and thus endeth the work for the week

Monday 29 Geo M & Nathnl Goodwin finished the end eave put Cornice on and the little blocks & painted put on Eave board and made ready for Clapboarding. Mr. K. arrived at noon and afterward these two assisted Mr K. getting ready the couples for the wing which was put on also JB.M J.C. & WH.G. put sleepers all through and otherwise assisted in putting on the rafters

Tuesday 30 All the men of yesterday was at work again today but N.G. only spent half day. All was at work on the wing the south end was posted out. Sheathed all round covering nailed on and 4 Brls Asphalt used

Saturday 4th Nathnl. G. & Geo C. Mansfield finished clapboarding the West end of shop as far down to within two courses of facing board which we are deprived of just now. Monday 6. Mr. K. & Geo. C. M. spent the day making four window boxes for the wing J.B.M. was engaged putting up shelves in the wing Joseph C & W.H.G. put eves [sic] along the side and end nearly to a finish & Wm Barrett ceiled one side of aisle leading to Tel. office and partily fitted the opening for the receiving & giving out of mail matter he also removed Some hard pine Ceiling from old office.

Tuesday 7. Wm. Barrett spent the day at office again having faced the opening on the inside of letter receptacle faced inside & outside the door of the office & hanged it. JB.M. finished the shelves in the store & built a box for to contain oats. G.C.M. & Wm H.G spent the day put on the eaves under the covering of shop on east side. Mr. K. was also engaged at this work until noon when E.C. Janes came to remove the tel office & then he spent the afternoon assisting him.

Reid & Brothers out with caplin brot. from H. Hr. but did not catch any.

At even very good catches were taken Esau Harris 10 qtls J.B.M & W.H.G. abot [sic] 6 each J Clark 5 others fair catches prospects good. Heard at noon from Schnr. Garnishee from Lancy Meadows via Griquet where she arrived on 27th ult leaving Hants Hr. on Monday 16 she experienced a difficult time to get along owing to ice. She reports good sign fish.

Wednesday 6 A beautiful fine day with Westerly wind blowing a nice breeze all day. Considerable fish was traped [sic] by the men of Brownsdale HTA leading with 30 qtls others 10 to 15 qtls here Z..R. & G.M. & Wm. G. trapped 5 qtls. each others lesser amounts I.R. traps weren't hauled by any of the parties fishing there fishing there thought to have ended for this season Some caplin still about but getting very scarce Mr. & Mrs Hatcher visited us at evening on the way to Hants Hr.

A few men fishing and altho having little squid bait found fish very scarce and reports the grounds becoming very scarce of cod our horse was to Lead Cove with flour & cement after hauled 34 qtls of fish from Diamond to store and at evening took niece Bertie Goodwin to H.Hr. where she will stay to night & leave from there to morrow for Toronto. Revs. Messrs. Richards & Adams visited us at 11 a.m. on their way to H.Hr. and inspected the church throughout. The day was a very busy one with us all through

Friday 29 Sunshining in the morning but dampening owing to the rain of last night At breakfast hour it became misty again & continued until noon when it clared up & became spendidly fine with strong westerly wind. The Schnr. Lucinda came to take freight in themorning proceeded to Brownsdale where I weighed 130 ½ qtls & then to Whales Brook & weigh 44 [qtls] by this time it was dusk & I hastened home again

Saturday 27 A dull & lowry day with heavy atmosphere sultry & dead heat most oppressive, this season At evening & night it rained almost continuously The schooner Lucinda came here for breakfast hour and discharged two skiff loads of lumber. The day all three was exceptionally busy with us all and at evening the assistance of the school teachers on the shore Misses Thistle & Crumy who with Miss Pugh proved of much service to us they each having helped us considerably.

Sunday 26 Fairly fine & main services conducted by usual laymen.

October 27, Monday

Monday 27 Strong gale of SE wind blowing & rained all afternoon. Servants washing Bags & board and otherwise cleaning up liver store. Apslm Reid was at work forenoon hauling [?] Business was fairly brisk all day. Francis Pynn spent from morning until 4 pm [?] making funnelling for office & spent half of today putting them up & fitting in a [slider?] for letters

October 28, Tuesday

Tuesday 28 Mr. Kelland finished the drawers & began the making of the opening from postal to private offices Wm.H.G. finished the shelves & the making of the paper holders

October 29, Wednesday Mr Kelland finished the opening refered [sic] to yesterday in my office and whent home in afternoon & WmH. Goodwin sawed the opening in the loft for the funnelling and otherwise prepared it for such. In the afternoon he remained at home.

Nov. Monday 3 Mr. Kelland arrived in the afternoon and spent the evening facing and making & hanging door in the Tel office to connect with one in my office
