June 24, Tuesday June Tuesday 24th Schnrs. "Grilse" & "Mary E" sailed from Hants Hr. at noon today their destination being the Straits of Belle Isle First news received from them that they were at Fortune Notre Dame Bay ice bound

Saturday Aug. 9th recd. message from Cooks Hr at noon to day. Schnr Grilse 300 qtls. all well

[?] Thursday 28th [Left?] after using 1010 Salt and securing 700 tubs fish arrived at Hants Hr. at Hants Hr. at 4 am. on Sunday Sept 7th and came here in motor boat abt 9 am same morning on the afternoon of Monday the 8th the traps with much of the outfit was brot. here in motor boat on Tuesday the wind being Notherly their [sic] wasn't anything done.

Thursday 12th Grapnels & blubber brot. down. The week passed without any effort made to discharge fish owing to difficulty of getting it cured & uncertainty of price.

Wed 15 Came here in the early morning & discharged upward of 120 Brls Flour 36 Brls 3 Tc & 2 P. Mols [Brls] Meat & other goods & took unboard 200 qtls Fish remain all night but Thursday morng 16th being dull & unfit for handling fish left at a am for H.Hr. The week all through tho was an exceptional one for this season of the year a smooth sea every day & Tuesday & Saturday especially good days for handling & curing fish

Tuesday 21 owing to trouble with motor boat & having to travel the Schnr did not get here until breakfast hour & then with a goodly numbers [sic] of willing workers she was filled up by 4 pm. we having weighed a total of 670 qtls beside considerable sent on freight by wish of owners approximated her load is now 800 qtls We also shipped by her 18 steel Drums to be refilled with Kero oil & 4 Casks refined oil and 11 Comm oil

Wed & Th absent Friday Mornig went to W. Brook & brot up from there the belting & spent the rest of day cleaning saw in New Mill

Mr. Kelland sr. arrived on Tuesday May 6th commenced work Wed. 7 Made workbench in the cook room & dressed up facings for window boxes during the remaining days of the week he built a "stand" for weighing of fish and about Monday 12th began the foundation of the building of the New Mill continued at this work during the month.

June About the 4th June Mr. Harold Kelland came here and began work in the afternoon put covering board on the mill during the month they covered the mill & felted and tarred it. spent several days installing motor engine & hoist on wharf & built house for same several days was also spent in helping to concret [sic] the block of wharf and the month ended by them in doing work in this way, with the exception of the last day when concret [sic] form was built for main shaft & one block filled up with cement

Wed 2 All day spent on wheels which was completed main shaft put in position and one wheel fastened to it & put in position

Thursday 3 Finished the smallest pulley wheel & fastened to axle. Made improvement on the bench and rollers so as to make it run smoothly & evenly made up a belt from the rubber belting of the old mill & partily finished a few feet of new bench fastening to old now in position

Friday July 4. Finished spanning the bench & constructing new piece & made the second Belt for Mill

sat. 5 spent the morning helping us land Goods from s.s. Petrel & then until dinner hour at work on bench & belts. Mr. Harold Kelland went home at noon his father spent afternoon sharpening saw.

Monday 7 Mr. K sr. spent the whole of today sharpening saw. His son Harold did not return until late at evening.

Tuesday 8th The two workmen spent the day trying to get the saw mill engine to work and succeeded ere the days work ended slabbing the first stick

Wednesday 9 sawed 20 Posts & put some rimming around the smallest drum wheel much of the day spent in trying to get engine to run satisfactory. Day was a stormy one throughout with rain & sleet & cold. Traps hauled in the morning by three or four parties only 2 to 4 qtls. taken by each

Thursday 10th Made a new guage [sic] for bench spent some time fitting rollers so as to saw more evenly spanned the bench on which rests the iron pulley & sawed about 15 logs in board of 1 ¼ inch for flooring

Friday 11 Fitted a sleeper and nailed down the flooring sawn yesterday which covered the [sic] around the [Enginge?] and about half of the length of the foor [sic] space on North side of bench The saws not running evenly much time was again spent in trying to get it to cut timber evenly. The only sawing done was three or four pcs. cills [sic] slabbed. The trap set at I. Rock was taken on shore this mornig nearly all torn off of head rope but with the help of willing workers was again ready by Evening. No fish owing to tides so that traps could not be hauled.

Saturday 12th sharpened saws in the morning & again fixed rollers & saw so that it now works better than at any time Mr. K. sr. whent [sic] home in afternoon. Harold sawed a few pcs sills for cook room & also a few sticks of flooring for mill Our trap at Harrys shoal taken on shore also Joshua Goodwins leader.

Monday 14 Mr. K.- sr. did not return to day. Harold spent forenoon puting flooring in mill and in the afternoon sawed some more flooring. Quite a few traps had from 8 to 14 qtls fish in the morning but none afterward.

Tuesday 15th Harold spent forenoon nailing down flooring in spaces distant south of bench & sawed a few posts his father returned in the afternoon The SS Petrel called soon after & having quite a lot of goods they helped us in the landing so that there was nothing more done with Mill Work for the day.

Wednesday 16 Both of them spent the day sawing posts cills [sic] & couple pcs. for new cook room. Clarks at evening traped 14 qtls. fish and Albert Reid about the same others nill.

Thursday July 17th Began today & spent the time laying the foundation of a house 45 x 18 for the three fold purpose of cook & wash house carriage & wood. The side & end cells [sic] was put to gether & placed in position pillored & levelled.

Friday 18. Sawed a few sleepers and put in middle cell did the sleepring completely, prepared about a dozen posts for the building, & put props. & other stone pillars under neath the foundation.

Saturday 19 spent the day posting the building & put in position what was required, fitted jams for windows & doors & put top walls all around

Monday 21 Sawed abt 16 posts for couples made 7 & put 6 of them in position. Wind N & some sea on Fish scarce none taken in traps but at Lead Cove New Chelsea & HHr. considerabl was taken

Tuesday 22 Forenoon made & put two more couples in position removed [telpph?] pole which was in the way of building put posts underneath the end couples afternoon sawed several posts which was fastened to the corners to the building as double posts put in ridge pole or board & spanned it in each corner. Sea on to day Traps hauled under difficult circumstances & fish landed at Indian Point & south side J.B.M 15 qtls

Wed. 23 Raining all the forenoon so that the Messrs Kellands spent the day in the mill making window boxes (7) for the house they're building. at evening they put them each in their places in the building

Thursday 24 commenced the capboarding [sic]. South end finished to height of top wall & 7 course nailed on West side as far as the length of the cookroom is intended to be "Mr. K- sr. went home" at 10 pm to confer with parties about the building of a new [Post?] office

Friday 25 Mr. Harold Kelland spent from 7 to 9 am in mill sawing fine axle of old mill for to make coffin for the late Mrs Ann Evans after wards spent the day clapboardig the West side of house and did more than two thirds of it. Heard at eveing of Meadus of G. Cove having 300 qtls fish in his trap and of large hauls at o.p. L Cove Avery of B [60?] of eving [Kates? 25 ?]

Saturday 26 spent forenoon clapboard East side to a distance of about 15 ft and nearly the height to a finish. Afternoon he went home.

Wednesday 30th Mr. Herald [sic] Kelland arrived at noon and spent the rest of day clapboarding. Lots of fish being traped this evening by all some - two skiffs visited Trinity today for salt & retd at evening.

July 31, Thursday Thursday 31st Harold fished [sic] clapboarding the two sides of & nailed six courses on North end of building to day Four or five skiffs crossed the bay to Trinity for salt again to day at evening quite a few trap hauled & a score or many qtls taken from each. wife & Joyce went to old Perlican in afternoon in Motor boat with Noah Driscoll wife & others to welcome home their son Wesley, who was retning from the seat of war.

Monday 4th Mr. Kelland, sr. arrived at breakfast hour and spent the day with Harold at work covering the roof little more than half of it now being covered with the South end sawn of [sic] to a finish Much time was spent taking loft and petitions [sic] from old cook room

Tuesday Aug 5th spent until about 11 am sawing board for eves & rough boards about 145 ft. part of it was used to about half the length of the roof on each side & south end & Cornice moulding put around the same.

Wed. 6. The forenoon was spent using felt about half of the roof covered with it. Afternoon covering was used of board taken from floor of old cook room about half of the west side now uncovered with the days work was done

Thursday 7th Finished the covering with board & also finished putting rough board and cornice moulding around the roof.

Friday 8. owing to strong S. wind they did not do the Felting to the roof to day but petitioned [sic] the part of building intended for cook room used what flooring we had on hand which covered about half of the room. made a work bench and a door box

Saturday 9th The two workmen spent some time sawing posts for petitions [sic] & other purposes. Harold left at 11 am Johny accmp. him in motor boat as far as H.Hr Geo C M- going their [sic] for salt. Mr. K sr spent the day flooring the cook room & used what board we had for that purpose a space about 4 by 6 is now infinished [sic]

Monday 11 A splendid day light W. wind Mr H.K arrived in the early morning & the two began the work of puting felt on about half of the buildig still requiring it & finished the job in the forenoon. Afternoon they put the end & crossing facing & eves on South end & what little clapbord was needed so that the S end was brot to a finish

Tuesday 12th A splendidly fine day Eaves & base boards was put around the sides of the building the length of the part intended for cook room. Much time in afternoon was spent helping us land goods from "Petrel." Wm H. Joshua G & others put unshore their smaller traps to day I.R. Trap taken up yesterday.

Wednesday 13 put up posts across c. room so as to partition bedroom from kitchen nailed strips of board all around kitchen & fastened to it the beaver board except the south end & the loft.

August 14, Thursday

Thursday 14 spent some time in the mill sawing board sufficient to strip the loft of cook room to nail beaver board on. After this done the [beaver board] was nailed on all that was required for the room which concluded the work for the day.

August 15, Friday

Friday 15 Fitted & put cornice moulding around room. Moulding was dressed & put on the seams of the loft, and about half of the wainscoting was put on.

sat 16 wainscoting finished around the kitchen of cook room mouldings put all around the wainscoting & the sames [sic] of the Beaver Board around the Kitchen was also finished with moulding Mr. Kelland sr went home soon after taking dinner

August 18, Monday

Monday 18 Mr K- sr. at home all day. Harold partitioned the bedrooms nailed strips around it for to fasten the Beaver Board & hard Pine ceiling to & put the wainscoting around about two thirds of one room. Albert Reid and others who had intended to take unshore their traps to day was apprised [sic] to find in them several qnts of very large cod fish

Mr. K.- sr. arrived at about 8 am the two of them spent the day putting Beaver Board on the two bed rooms & finished them in this respect.

Wed. 20 About two thirds of the secnd. bed room was wainscotted which used up all the hard pine ceiling we had in stock Moulding was prepared for the rooms to cover seams of Beaver Board & Mr. H. Dressed & Moulded ½ in board suffient for to face two doors which was nailed on, about 4 ft of flooring required to finish the room was dressed up & put in place

Thursday 21 The second room with wainscoting second hand was finished cornice put around & partily moulded moulding & rounds put around wainscoting facings for the inside of the two room dressed & moulded & put in place

Friday 22 stops was put around kitchen or front Door [stops] or ¼ Rounds on rooms & all but south end of kitchen & two windows faced. Mr. Harold also spent some time greasing engines etc.

Saturday 23 spent forenoon sawing board for the flooring of the carriage room of the building Mr. H. went home in the afternoon Mr. K Sr. put up the posts for petiting the carriage house from wood house & nailed down about half of the flooring.

Monday 25 Mr. H. at home all day Mr. A. nailed down in carig house a few flooring brd. the only left unused on saturday & ceiled about 6 ft square of same in the afternoon he spent the time cutting mortise in door Jams for the making of door for cook room.

August 26, Tuesday Tuesday 26 spent forenoon sawing flooring for carriage room Harold nailed in dorm in afternoon or what was required to floor it & his father spent the time making a door.

August 27, Wednesday

Wednesday 27 Door was finished for the Kitchen of cook room put on its hinges & Lock put on it. some more of the petititioning [sic] of carrig room from wood house was put up so that more than half is now done. Afternoon they began sawing but had to leav [sic] of [sic] owing to warmth. So the eveing was spent put door box in carrig and wood house N. side

Thursday 28th spent some time in the mill Enlarged the Drum Wheel by putig another [rimming?] round it & put on new belt for first time Sawed flooring sufficient to floor Wood House and did the flooring excepting a small space of three or 4 ft. square.

Friday 29 Finished flooring wood house. Dressed the facings for the two bedroom windows & put it on. finished wainscoting a bed room which was partialy done only for want of P Ceiling put moulding on it & ¼ rounds on floor also ¼ rounds in end facings of s. end of each room. The door boxes was also finished in carriage & wood house & lentels [sic] put over the doors. Henry Pynn tarred the roofing of it in the afternoon. Johney drove with J. Clarks horse & wagon his mother Nelson Aunt Mary & her 2 children to Chelsea in fore noon & his mother & Nelson had the mishap of falling out of wagon & injurng the former considerably.

Saturday 30th Mr. K. sr. in the forenoon finished the partition of the carriage from wood house and went home soon after dinner Harold dressed up & put togethr 4 sashes for cook room.

Monday Sept 1st Mr. Harold spent the day finishing & painting window sashes which Job he completed. His father did not return to day.

Tuesday 2nd Mr. Kelland sr. arrived at breakfast hour & they both spent the day puttying in glass in each sash put them in their boxes & put stops around them wherever [necessy?] & so completed that work. They also spent some time helping us in the handling of freight from S.S. "Petrel"

Wed. 3 The eaves base boards & end facings from cook room part of buildig, to the North end was finished & & [sic] the little clapboard required was also put on so that to day the finishing on the outside was completed.

Thursday 4 spent some time in the mill sharpening saw and sawing board thought to be sufficient for the making of 4 Doors necessary for wood & carriage house this was nearly all plained & two of the doors made. Day very wet. Hy. & Hbt. removed foundation & other rubbish of the old Cook room

Friday 5 Finished the making of 4 Door put stops around the opening & fastened them to their hinges Mr. H. also put step to one of the wood house doors & Mr A put fasteners to windows & thus their days work was done

Sat. 6 Mr. K. sr. Left for home in the early morning at 4am in response to Tel. message of last eveng Mr. H put step to cook room door & to the west door of wood house. painted the South end of Cook room with Empire Brown paint & the Felt mouldng with rich crimson Soon after dinner he also went home Chesly Driscoll driving him part way.

Monday Sept. 8th Both workmen absent being at home.

Tuesday 9th Mr. H. returned in the early morning and spent the day painting. The Trimming & facings of south end of cook room was painted with white & the West side was entirely finished with red or Empire Brown but the facings remains for another day. He also painted with Rich Crimson the felt moulding compltely

Wednesday 10th Painted the whole of the East side with colour & white except the base board only.

September 11, Thursday

Thursday 11 Mr. Harold painted west end & what was left of base boards ect. [sic]. he also painted with Rich Crimson for second time the carriage doors so that now the painting is entirely completed. Mr. K. sr. returned at Breakfast hour & spent the day at work on mill & boarding up what was intended for a second door at east end & making box for the one door only

Friday 12 He continued at work put on end facings and clapboarded about 1/3 of it. Mr. H as it was wet ceiled the carrig room by the doors and afterward sawed the frame for two fish barrers & dressed up the 1 side bars & mortised the same.

Sat. 13 Mr. K. sr. spent the day clapboarding mill & finished the East end to the height of sides Mr. H. made the two fish barrers & repaired a third & painted two of them

September 15, Monday

Monday 15 Mr. H. spent the day repairing & painting fish barrers & his father puting [sic] eves on East end & finished the little clapboarding as well. Wife Johney Pearl, Mrs. Grandy & two children was taken in the early morning to Old Perlican to meet the train wife & Pearl going to st John's. Johney to Sackvill & the later to her home North side skipper Fred Mansfield with Wm H. Goodwin Jr. conveyed them their [sic] in his motor boat & retd again @ 11 am.

Tuesday 16 Mr. K. sr. finished the eaves & put Felt moulding around East end and spent the afternoon clapboardng North side. Mr. H- Finished painting barrers fastened two pieces & painted trolley made a stand for fish beam weights painted it & weights of one beam as well.

Wed. 17 Mr. K. sr. spent nearly all of the day clapboarding the North side which is now finished to heigh [sic] of windows late at evening he sharpened saw (mill) Mr. H- spent the day making repairs to Fish Store door putting threshold & facings on it & a door step. Joseph Clark was at work for the greater part of the day hauling logs from the site of the old mill 163 that had been left their [sic] unsawn & 25 purchased in the spring from Albert Durdle a total of 188 pd. J Clark $2.50

Thursday 18th Mr K. Sr. Dressed and fastened two end facings to south side of mill and seven course of clapboard the total length of same. Harold sawed 12 logs (helped by his father as well) after which he made the two doors for the mill and hanged the outer one in position. Joseph Clark hauled three loads (35) Logs from Thornes garden whales Brook part of lot of (70) purchased from Louis Thorn last spring. @ 10 or 12 cts a lg & Josep for carting 50¢ load.

Friday 19 Mr K. sr. Nailed on six courses by the South Side of Mill clapboard being now to the height of window he also nailed four courses on each side of door of West end. Mr H made door box fited [sic] & hung Door on West end & secured the East Door with the making of a bar & bolt. J. Clark again hauled 3 Load logs 35 a total of 70 in all

Sat 20 He Mr. Harold painted the two doors helped his father put on clapboard to the height of the side and spent the evening both of them sawing board for eves.

Monday 22 Put eves and felt moulding and finished with clapboarding West end and put eves & felt moulding around South Side to a distance of about 15 ft

Tuesday 23. Finished eves on South side and on the North side as well with the exception of about 10 ft & the felt moulding. The work of dressing up board suitable for the work occupied much of the time.

Wed. 24 spent some time but to non [sic] effect in trying to remove saw from spindle so as to fasten new one sawed ½ Doz. sticks for board for window boxs and made the six required apart from putting on one pc on the head of each.

Thursday 25 Finished the boxes completely fitted the sashes secnd-hand purchased from Mrs. Simeon Bursey/ [sic] & put them in position also finished the eaves of North side apart from the felt moulding.

Friday 26 The Felt moulding was partily made by Mr. H & put on by his father who also Clapboarded the north side between & to the height of two upper windows. Mr. H spent some time cleaning engine & clapboarded the s. side to the height of two upper windows. They now decided to give up work here Having been engaged to build a new Methodist school at Winterton so that their work is ended here

Monday 17 Mr. H. Kelland arrived at evening & spent Tuesday 18 & the forenoon of Wed. 19 fixing bench & rollers and other wise preparing for sawing & during Thurs to Friday 20 Friday 21 & Sat 22 he did some sawig sawing about ½ M ½ in. board sawed several sticks in inch board & about enough of [1½?] in to cover & finish flooring the mill

Monday 24 split in halves 40 sticks for Absalom Driscoll and sawed several logs in inch board

November 25, Tuesday

Tuesday 25 sawed a number of small logs in ½ in board and several spruice [sic] sticks in plank for the service of the wharf

November 26, Wednesday

Wed. 26 sawed nearly all the sticks we had intended for Posts & several logs in half in board

November 27, Thursday

Thursday 27th Sawed the few stick left over in 1'2 in. board a few posts & several sticks for posts for new bench & about 160 staves for bery [sic] brls. also for others viz. Francis Pynn slide runner & bars Luther Mansfield 21 ft. ¾ board.
