| Scope and Content: | Series consists of photocopies of over 1200 individual documents relating to early modern Newfoundland, collected by Matthews in the course of his research into the West Country cod fisheries at Newfoundland. The documents are an almost complete collection of extant material held in British repositories that relates to the fisheries, settlement and political development of Newfoundland from European discovery and settlement to 1800. The collection was described and annotated by historian Peter Pope, in 1989. He also added relevant documents to the collection. |
