Additional Information Curwen's annotation: "Newfoundland fisherman's tilts are log and plank structures banked up with earth outside, with birch bark and turf roof and often with an empty flour barrel for chimney. They consist of one room, one end of which is partitioned off and serves as bedroom for skipper and larder; the rest of the crew sleep in a bunk house. When the house is left in the fall the windows are taken home to Newfoundland and the door left open to allow warm air to enter in spring and melt the snow that has come through roof."
