Surnames from Births, Deaths and Marriages in Newfoundland Newspapers, 1810-1890

The surnames in these pages are taken from the Births, Deaths and Marriages in Newfoundland Newspapers, 1810 - 1890 CD which contains more than 40,000 entries for births, deaths and marriages transcribed from 43 Newfoundland newspapers published between 1810 and 1890. From these files over 5,300 unique surnames emerged and it is these names which appear in the following web pages.

The information in the CD was compiled almost entirely by Gertrude (Murray) Crosbie who worked through Newfoundland newspapers covering the years 1825-1890, extracting birth, death and marriage information, and transcribing each entry onto an index card. She then transferred this information to a computer. Over the years, the MHA published Crosbie's work in 13 volumes. In 1999, the MHA began an ambitious project to transfer the entries to an interactive database for publication in CD-ROM format. As part of the project, the MHA also collected and entered relevant information from Newfoundland's earliest surviving newspapers, 1810-1825.

To obtain more information on the CD visit the Births, Deaths and Marriages in Newfoundland Newspapers, 1810 - 1890 page on the Maritime History Archive web site.
