Biography/Admin History: HMS "Calypso" - built at Chatham, England in 1881, owned by the Royal Navy of the British Armed Forces, warship and training vessel. In 1902, HMS "Calypso" was sent to Newfoundland to serve as a training vessel for the Newfoundland Royal Naval Reserve until 1922, at which point the renamed "Briton" was sold for use as a storage hulk. In 1952, she was towed to the harbour of Lewisporte, where she stayed for twenty years. The remains of the "Briton" now lie just off shore at Embree, where she was towed in 1968.
Custodial History: Original owner is unknown. The album was given to Malcolm Griffin around 1991 by his neighbour at the time who ran a boarding house. On a couple of occasions she had to clear out the rooms when the tenant died and it is believed the album came from one of the tenants. Mr. Griffin donated the album to the Maritime History Archive in 2011.
