Description: Captain Ben Taverner, (1880-1942) was a mariner, born at Trinity, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland. From deckhand on a foreign ship at the age of fourteen to becoming captain of the flagship, the S.S. "Caribou", he died at sea when his ship was sunk by a German U-boat, October 14, 1942.
