Biography/Admin History: Built 1923 at Kaldnaes Mek. Verks., Tonsberg, for A/S Hvalen, Tonsberg. Named for the French polar explorer and researcher Dr. Jean Baptiste Charcot (1867-1936). Transferred (1929) to A/S Hektor. Hunted from Deception Island, South Shetland Islands, until 1931, then for the Compania de Pesca Argentina, Buenos Aires, from Grytviken, South Georgia. Damaged (1 January 1937), Leith Harbour, South Georgia. Salvaged and repaired, Montevideo. Impounded (1941) by Great Britain and assigned to wartime patrols with the Royal Navy. Bought (1944) by Christian Salvesen and Co., whaled from Hawke Harbour (Polar Whaling Co.) until 1951. Laid up, then sold (1956) to the Hawke Harbour Whaling Co. (Capt. Johan Borgen). Worked until 1959, then moored at Conception Harbour and beached nearby (1970). Hulk locally thought to be the remains of the catcher "Sposa", but confirmed as "Charcot" by the Shipwreck Preservation Society of Newfoundland and Labrador in 2013.
