Adm. Hist/Bio. Sketch: George J. Carter, merchant, was born in Ferryland, May 4, 1850. He married Elizabeth Viola Goodridge, daughter of Alan and Grace Goodridge, August 26, 1877. Carter took over the E.J. Duder firm in Herring Neck in the spring of 1895 after Duder declared bankruptcy due to the Bank Crash in December 1894. By 1910, Carter's son, Frank, had taken over and in 1917, George became a partner in Goodridge and Company, Limited, with his in-laws. Eventually, Joseph White, Sr. of Twillingate took over the Carter firm and operated the business until about 1965 when Harold McGinn became the new manager. By 1967 the company closed and in 1970, Earle Freighting Services leased the premises and used the facility for their fleet of longliners. Ultimately, competition for fish was too great and they folded in 1974.
