Sunday Afternoon [May 10]

We just finished dinner, mother and I, and before I get ready for school, I shall write a little more. I really believe it is going to rain, and it was so beautiful just now.

Nina Yarns baby died a short while ago: she had something wrong with her brain, poor child, I don't know what caused it. Simeon has been dreadfully sick. He had a sore throat, so sore, that when he received Holy Communion by Mr. Grouchy it ran out through his nose. It's a miracle he didn't choke. The doctor ordered him to paint it, which he did. Just fancy one having to paint his throat.

Ida told me, her mother called her one morning to go up in the room to see her father. She looked through the door & he was sleeping or they thought he was, with his eyes half open. They thought it was all over with him. He would have died only he was treated so well.

Ida said she thought that if he had died, they would be left the same as we were. He would wake up in the nights & have to drink vinegar straight away to clear his throat.
