Inside a Fisherman's Tilt at Battle Hr., 1893
"Inside of a Fisherman's Tilt at Battle Hr.", 1893
Note the effort to keep the room attractive, evident in the lace doilies and the cups and saucers stored on the shelf. Dr. Eliot Curwen accompanied Dr. Wilfred T. Grenfell in 1893 to northern Newfoundland and Labrador. He noted in his album that "In this one room live 4 men, 1 boy & 1 girl, night & day."

A further note stated: "Interior of tilt at Webeck Harbour, [Labrador] showing open fire, open chimney, cracks in walls, iron bake pot, tea kettle, loaf of bread, etc., 22 Aug. 1893". However, regarding the location, on the front of the photo it states that the tilt is at Battle Hr., which is south of Webeck Hr., mentioned by Curwen.

"A Labrador mother views her tiny garden of precious vegetables", n.d.
The photographer, Dr. Fred C. Sears, was a professional agriculturalist who volunteered with the International Grenfell Mission from 1929 to 1942. His particular interest was northern gardens. He remarked about this photograph: "Compared with the great fields of such crops in Canada or the United States it may not be very impressive, but its contribution to the health of her family through its precious vitamines [sic] is a cause for great rejoicing."

Joseph Goss and his wife, 1893
Joseph Goss and his wife, 1893
Joseph Goss, his wife, and tilt, Inner Sandy Islands, 21 July 1893. Eliot Curwen, the photographer, wrote: "Newfoundland fisherman's tilts are log and plank structures banked up with earth outside, with birch bark and turf roof and often with an empty flour barrel for chimney. They consist of one room, one end of which is partitioned off and serves as bedroom for skipper and larder; the rest of the crew sleep in a bunk house. When the house is left in the fall the windows are taken home to Newfoundland and the door left open to allow warm air to enter in spring and melt the snow that has come through roof."
