Arthur Hornsbur Hardy was born in Orange, Texas on October 15th, 1919, the second son of Henry Arthur Hardy and Amelia Koscher Hardy. His older brother Woodrow Henry was born in 1916.
In 1924 the Hardy family moved to Des Allemands, Louisana and in 1935 they moved to New Orleans. Arthur attended Louisana State University in Baton Bouge for about a year, prior to working for Western Electric in New Orleans.
Like other young men, shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbour he enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve. He enrolled in basic training at Norfolk, Virginia in late December of 1941 and completed it in late January, 1942. He was then assigned to the USS Pollux. He was only at sea two weeks when the disaster occurred.
Arthur died on February 18, 1942 at the age of twenty-two. He was never married and had no children.
The next day Andy's family received a telegram from Rear Admiral Randall Jacobs of the U.S. Navy stating "The Navy Dept. Exceedingly regrets to advise that your son Arthur Hornsbur Hardy, apprentice seaman, USN Reserve, lost his life on February 18, 1942 in the performance of his duty and in the service of his country... sincere sympathy is extended to you in this deep sorrow."
He was buried in plot 3, Row C, Grave 104 at Argentia, Newfoundland in the Fort McAndrew Cemetary and in December of 1947 was moved to Long Island National Cemetery, Farmingdale, New York.
Andy had entered the Navy with Andre Landry, a childhood friend. They had gone through school together and both entered the US Naval Reserve, trained together and signed on the USS Pollux. Tragically they both died in the disaster, standing at their stations to the end.
