Chester Rufus McKay, son of James and Elizabeth McKay, was born 19 October 1910 at New Port Richey, Florida. He had an older sister, Helen, and two younger brothers, George and James. He enlisted in the United States Navy 1 November 1940 and served in the US receiving station in Norfolk, Virginia, before joining USS Pollux as Boatswain's Mate second class. He died 18 February 1942 when the Pollux wrecked off the coast of Newfoundland. He is buried at Pine Hill Cemetery, New Port Richey. VFW Post 7987 at New Port Richey was founded 15 August 1946 and was named in his honor.
