Philip Templeman Limited Diary, 1914 Philip Templeman (1860-1926) emerged from the local planter class at Bonavista to create one of Newfoundland's most successful fish merchant firms in the late 19th century. In 1884, after purchasing the harbourfront premises of the bankrupted firm of James Saint in Bonavista, adjacent to competitors James Ryan, Baine, Johnston and Company and William Kough, the firm quickly established itself as an able competitor of James Ryan (by then one of Newfoundland's most prosperous outport merchants), and soon attracted hundreds of clients. With exports exceeding 70,000 quintals annually by 1913, he was one of Newfoundland's largest producers. Over the years, Templeman established seasonal barter shops in Bonavista, Elliston, Newman's Cove, and Amherst Cove, as well as others at Musgrave Harbour, LaScie, William's Port on the French Shore, Frenchman's Island, Grady, and Indian Tickle in Labrador, in addition to premises at St. John's. Templeman opened a year-round branch at Catalina in 1901. The 1914 diary - part of the Philip Templeman Limited (Catalina) fonds - was maintained at the Philip Templeman Limited office in Catalina with entries made by the firm's staff, including S. Reid, J.S. Courage, Joseph Tippett and J.W. Clouter. Many of the entries record matters relevant to the business such as fish catches, shipping movements and weather conditions. There are also reports on occurrences and events in Catalina and neighbouring towns, and on national and international events such as the S.S. Newfoundland Sealing Disaster, World War I, and the sinking of the Empress of Ireland. ________________________________ JANUARY 1 THURSDAY Wind Westerly fine & frosty General Holiday Schr "Kuvera" came in from St Johns about 4 P.M.
